Introducing the LocalGov Drupal Accessibility Governance Group

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the Accessibility Governance Group – a new community-led group focused on improving the accessibility of the entire LocalGov Drupal ecosystem: products, documentation, tools, and community activity.

Accessibility has long been a shared priority in the LGD community. With developer responsibilities shifting and more councils and suppliers getting involved, now is the perfect time to strengthen our collective approach.

This group builds on the work of previous accessibility meetups and the leadership shown by Maria Young and others across the network.

What the group does

The group’s aim is simple: to improve accessibility across the LGD ecosystem. That includes:

  • Championing accessibility-first development
  • Setting and maintaining standards and guidance
  • Keeping our accessibility statement up to date
  • Curating resources and documentation
  • Validating the accessibility of our tools and platforms
  • Running monthly accessibility meetups
  • Promoting Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)
  • Commissioning accessibility audits
  • Monitoring the accessibility issue queue
  • Sharing accessibility updates with the wider community

  • Aaron Hirtenstein (LGD Core Team) – Facilitator
  • Tom Bamford (Annertech)
  • Ryan Falcon-Hay (Hammersmith & Fulham)
  • Mayur Patel (Walsall Council)
  • Hannah Harvey (Brighton & Hove)

  • Lizzi Cox (Bracknell Forest)

A massive thank you to each of these volunteers for stepping up to support the community in this vital area through to the end of 2025.

What’s happened so far

In the first two meetings, the group:

  • Finalised its remit and ways of working
  • Reviewed the initial results of the LGD core product accessibility audit
  • Began drafting an accessibility statement and discussed potential VPATs
  • Planned upcoming topics for accessibility meetups, including manual audit tips, accessible presentations, and internal training
  • Started reviewing accessibility documentation and issue templates

We’re already seeing great collaboration and momentum. If you’d like to contribute ideas or feedback, join us in the #group-accessibility Slack channel or check out our GitHub project board.
